Life Imitates Art: Robberies At Cannes Film Festival

Purportedly $1.4 million dollars (that's this many -- $1,400,000) in Chopard jewels was stolen last night out of a hotel room at the Novotel Hotel in Cannes, France during the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Coincidentally, the film opening the Un Certain Regard (A certain glance) category at Cannes Film Festival hours before the robbery: Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, a film about ritzy robberies in celebrities homes.

Elysium Trailer Drops

At long last, after a Comic Con footage display, a poster and a special screening yesterday, we finally have the first look at Neil Blomkamp's Elysium. I can't help feeling like I'm part of the population living on earth, drowning in wait and agony while the film-affiliated live above on Elysium get the spoils and specials of this earlier than us.

If you read my stuff, climb this tree, or just know me in general, you'll know how much I championed his District 9. So you can only imagine as a fan of this burgeoning filmmaker how excited I'm finding myself about this one. With Damon staring as Max, a lowly earth-dweller who finds himself in dire need of medical treatment that can only be found on the sky-parked station, Elysium.

Fairy tale? Fairytaledom is where is this is inspired from; but in the end isn't exactly a thriller/chaser. And we also get some unexpected but well-placed magic injected into it's veins, causing a nice and steady flow of wonderment through the blood stream. It is also a coming-of-age story as well. A coming-of-age tale. . .

A Review: Welcome To The Rileys

I remember when I first caught the sweet, rich smelling wind of this film being made; the cast and crew involved--and I got excited. Then I remember when Ebert posted his review of it after watching it at Sundance last January--and I felt a great of swell joy at his reaction.

See, if you are in fact a reader of my literature, then you would know that The Rog and me tend to see films and movies through the same or very similar set of eyes. So with his posting of his thoughts on the Jake Scott film (Son of Ridley Scott and Nephew to Tony; two producers on this) I was most pleased in deed. And now I am very inclined to agree with the man as well.

She is a certified BA in my eyes. If only for being the first woman to win a Tony for directing a musical. She's had time in theater and comes from that, using those honed skills and bringing a uniqueness to film. The Tempest included and directed Anthony Hopkins in the film adapt. Titus, another William Shakespeare play. She's slated to bring Spider-Man to Broadway as a musical. She directed Salma Hayek to her first Oscar nom in Frida. Across The Universe, a play off the Beatles as a musical film she directed in '07, was amazing and it looks as if she has utilized some of those techniques from that, and brought something newer, harsher, more rigid to this one. And very I'm fuckin' stoked.

Emma Stone of Superbad, Zombieland and Easy A (her first toplining role right now garnering her boat loads of acclaim) is being expected to receive an official offer from Sony Pictures the role of Mary Jane "Holey Shit I'm So Hot" Watson in the upcoming reboot for Spider-Man.

A Preview: Money Never Sleeps, And Neither Do Sequels

When I first heard that Oliver Stone was producing/directing another Wall Street film, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, it first occurred to me: why the fuck, bro?

Actually, let me back up a bit. Back in June, 2009 I read that Javier Bardem was attached to the project and was in final talks to play the villain. Then in July, 2009  it was reported that Bardem had turned down the project in favor of shooting a film adaptation of the best-selling book, Eat, Pray, Love with Julia Roberts. It was later stated that Bardem had turned down the role because if he'd chosen to do both film projects it would have had caused filming and scheduling conflicts and that the actor had had "five or six other offers." I was a little dampened on the previous enthusiasm I had for the project.

First Clip Released For 'Passion Play'

A Passion Play is a play about the death and final hours of Christ, I've seen my sister do one for our church when we were kids. She was the Virgin Mary.

It just so happens this film, is about Megan Fox as a sort of fallen angel/circus freak-show who is in some trouble with a local mobster played by . . . Bill Murray? All the while getting mixed up with Mickey Rourke as down-and-out trumpet player. (Whiz Khalifa voice) Oookkaaaaayyyy!

Scenes That Are Dope: Iron Man's First Outing

This well timed and anticipated scene was the played over and over in my head for like a week after I saw this movie. After this one, all we get is the ending sequence of Iron Monger battling Iron Man with the wonderful Jeff Bridges doing his best to be sinister.

To grab the shots of the Iron Man/F-22 Raptors dog fight, cameras were flown in the air to provide reference for physics, wind and frost on the lenses. For further study of the physics of flying, skydivers were filmed in a vertical wind tunnel.

And now via Filmonic, longtime fan of Lovecraft's, a unique and crafty visionary himself, Guillermo del Toro, is directing the adaptation of the acclaimed novella with James Cameron producing the Real-D for him.
